The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has sent newly trained female water guards to the state’s inland waterways’ jetties and terminals.
The step, according to a statement released in Lagos on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, by Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, LASWA’s General Manager, the step was made to ensure efficient operations.
He stated that the agency’s organizational outreach was being increased for efficient service delivery.
“We sent them to jetties where there aren’t enough people and places where our presence isn’t yet felt.
”They’ve gone through a series of courses on basic waterway safety, jetty operations, and conflict resolution.
“On the waterways and at jetties, they have been trained to ensure sufficient safety enforcement by boat operators and ferry passengers,” he said.
According to Emmanuel, the female water guards were stationed at the Odo Agemo jetty in the Egan Igando district, the Isashi jetty near Iyana school, and the Ojo Iyana Iba jetty.

They were also stationed at the Mile 2 Ferry Terminal near the Mile 2 Bus stop, the Imore jetty near the Alakija Bus stop, and the Ebute Chief jetty in Epe.
He disclosed that the department had a total of 108 water guards manning 37 jetties and terminals.
He explained that the decision to hire female water guards was made to give women a sense of belonging in the agency’s operations.
Emmanuel praised Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his dedication to developing the state’s water transportation system.
