UNIUYO student shot dead: In a supremacy battle between two rival cult groups at the University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom state, one student was killed and another was shot.
According to reports, the incident began on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, when a 300-level student in the Geography Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences was shot dead by some suspected cultists.
Following the death of the student identified as Duke Alexander, a rival group launched a retaliatory attack the following day.
“On Tuesday, a student from the Department of Geography was killed. However, around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, we heard gunshots in the Department of Fine Art and discovered that a final-year student had been shot. He was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he is being treated, according to a source.
Meanwhile, the institution’s administration has ordered all students to vacate their hostels until further notice.
The Registrar of the University, Mr. Aniediabasi Udofia, issued a statement on Thursday, July 1, urging students whose academic activities were still ongoing to do so from their respective homes.
“The University Management has issued a directive that all students residing in the University Campus hostels vacate the same by 6 p.m. today, Thursay, July 01, 20211, until further notice,” the statement said.
“Students who have ongoing academic activities (Examinations or Research Projects) at school during this period are advised to do so from home. The Dean of Students and the Director of Security are requested by this notice to ensure that the hostels were evacuated as directed by Management.”
