Police have arrested a UK Man after eggs were thrown at the King and Queen Consort during a walkabout in York.
North Yorkshire Police said the 23-year-old was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and is being questioned.
A suited protection officer positioned himself close to the King and briefly grasped his shoulder as the eggs dropped.
The crowd booed and yelled “God save the King” and “shame on you.”
As he was being apprehended, the demonstrator was heard shouting, “This country was established on the blood of slaves.”
The King almost trod on one of the eggs, but he seemed unfazed and continued going.
The incident occurred on the second day of the King and Queen Consort’s official royal tour to Yorkshire, during which they later travelled to Doncaster.
The royal couple were being welcomed by local leaders in York when a protester threw eggs at them while booing the couple.
As the eggs flew in his direction, Charles kept shaking hands with dignitaries, including the Lord Mayor, pausing briefly to inspect the shattered shells on the ground.
The eggs were whisked away since they missed the King and Queen Consort.
Several officers were seen detaining a man on the ground behind temporary fence erected in preparation for the King’s visit.
A witness identified as Kim Oldfield, owner of the Blossom Street Gallery, said she was standing in the doorway of her shop “enjoying” the couple’s arrival when she heard “some booing and eggs flying”.
“I glanced across, [saw] the police just descended on the barrier and tried to drag this chap over the top.
“About five eggs he’d managed to send.
“Camilla sort of flinched a little bit when the booing started but they [police] quelled it really quickly. Just a shame they spoilt what was a lovely moment.”
