Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has inaugurated Enugu Sports Club Executive Committee led by Mr Victor Atuonwu to foster and sustain unity and peace in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Atuonwu, had on March 24, elected new chairman of the club after scoring 257 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Uche Onoh, who polled 209 votes
Inaugurating the committee members at the Enugu Sports Club complex hall, Ugwuanyi charged them to rededicate themselves to the fulfilment of the club founding executives by providing topnotch and more recreational facilities.
Governor Ugwuanyi urged them to continue to expand the frontiers of unity, peace and development through their support and wise counsel to the incoming administration in Enugu under Governor-elect, Dr Peter Mbah.
He equally commended the past executives committees of the club for their contributions and ensuring the growth and development of the club over the years.
“The event of tonight is a solemn one for me as this is the last time I will be inaugurating the club’s executive committee as the president within the extant rule of the club and the provisions of the 1999 constitution as amended.
“It is also an occasion to thank you for the fidelity of your support, partnership and solidarity over the years.
“Your contribution to the leadership dialogue and agenda setting for good governance in Enugu State were impactful and cherished and I assure you of my abiding love and friendship,” he said.
In his address, Atuonwu said the committee has vision to be the epitome of sportsmanship, nurture ground for talents and making the club hub for athletic excellence within Enugu.
He stated that months ahead, they would be focusing on creating opportunities for athletes of all ages to develop their skills and showcase their talents.
“We hope to provide the platform for members to engage in various sports activities, fostering a culture of inclusivity and healthy competition.
“We will also invest in the development of our facilities and infrastructure, ensuring that we meet the highest standards and providing a conducive environment for athletes and enthusiasts alike,” he said.
The chairman requested for financial support of the state government and individuals to enable the committee meet up with its obligations,” he appealed.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chairman of the event, Chief Onyemauche Nnamani and Chief Executive Officer, Autostar Express, said that the sports club had provided so much joy and service to Enugu people and beyond and should be nurtured.
The event was attended by former governor of the state, Mr Sullivan Chime, the Chairman of Enugu State Universal Basic Education, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, who represented the Governor-elect, Mr Peter Mba at the occasion.
NAN reports that Atuownu becomes the 29th indigenous executive chairman of the club since its establishment in 1929 by the British colonialists.
