The State Coordinator for the trial Census in Nasarawa State Bamidele Sadiku says the trial census exercise will ensure the counting of every citizen in Nigeria which lead to the counting and capturing of the homeless individuals in the streets.
Sadiku stated this during the flagging off of Census Night in Karu local government area of Nasarawa State on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.
According to him, the commission has put in place adequate mechanisms that will guarantee a seamless Census in the country that will serve as a point of reference in the African continent.
The event which started at 10: 30 PM in the popular Mararaba Sharp corner where enumerators were set aside to enumerate all homeless persons visible within the selected enumeration areas also had in attendance, Federal Commissioners representing some states as well as directors of the commission.
Also speaking at the venue was the Chairman, National population commission, Nasir Isa Kwara represented by the Federal Commissioner, representing Rivers State, Doctor Ipalibo Harry, who said the exercise was to ensure every individual counts in the ongoing trial census.
According to him, the commission took special consideration of some people who do not have a residential home and there is a need for them to also be counted at the proper place in line with the international requirement, stressing that the exercise was held simultaneously across the six geo-political zones of the country.
Earlier, the Federal Commissioner, National population Commission in charge of Nasarawa state, Silas Ali Agara, who supervised the exercise, noted that aside from test running the gadget to be used during the actual headcount, the commission has set up machineries to ensure proper involvement of citizens for the benefit of all, thus applauded the commitment of NPC for choosing Nasarawa state for the trial census in a bid to ascertain requisite details of persons living under a roof, calling on people of the area to take the advantage of the exercise to be counted for.
While giving details on gadgets to be used in the next year’s headcount, the chairman, ICT committee of NPC who is also Federal commissioner representing Adamawa State, Doctor Clifford Zira, said the commission had adopted the use of technology to ensure the capturing of actual number of houses and the occupants unlike before where manual method was applied, describing the exercise as the first in the whole of the African continent.
The chairman, Karu Local government area, James Bawa Thomas, expressed satisfaction with the handling of the affairs of the commission particularly the commissioner, representing Nasarawa State, Silas Agara for his tireless effort towards ensuring the success of the programme.
During the exercise, some homeless persons were seen being enumerated through the aid of electronic devices to pave way for the commencement of the census night in the state.
