The Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom in Jesse, Ethiope West Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta, Chief Obukohwo Whiskey (Udurhie 1), has called on the Federal Government to intervene to save Nigeria’s media industry from collapsing.
Whiskey made the call while speaking to reporters in Benin on Sunday, April 18, 2021.
He defined the condition in which several journalists were owed multiple months’ salary by media organizations as unprecedented and needed to be resolved.
He also urged media owners to work tirelessly to change the narrative.
“I am convinced that we are in the midst of a crisis in the profession of journalism in Nigeria and that we must return to the drawing board.
“The journalism profession and media business in Nigeria today need a lifeline,” he said.

“The fact that many newspapers can no longer pay their employees and many others can no longer print the number of pages you used to print, while others are going off the newsstand, is a sign of severe economic weather,”
“Over 2000 social media pages cannot be equated to one national newspaper, and that was the training I received as a journalist,” Whiskey said.
As a thoroughbred professional, I know that seeing newspapers thriving would benefit the country more.

According to him because there is little verification at some stage, social media has unexpectedly become a dumping ground for disinformation, mud sliding, and others.
As such he said to recover, conventional media must depend on government assistance.
