Trader receives 20 strokes : Murtala Suleiman, a 20-year-old trader, has received 20 strokes of cane in a Shari’a Court in Rigasa Kaduna on Wednesday, August 11, for stealing six turkeys and one chicken from his stepmother.
The order was issued by Judge Malam Salisu Abubakar-Tureta after Sulaiman pleaded guilty to theft.
Earlier, the prosecution’s counsel, Insp Sambo Maigari, told the court that the accused elder brother, Salihu Suleiman, reported the matter to the Rigasa Police division on August 2.
He stated that the convict initially denied stealing the birds, but later confessed during a police investigation, and six turkeys were recovered.
The convict claimed in his defence that he sold the chicken and then decided to return the remaining birds.
He pleaded for mercy, claiming that he was high on drugs when he committed the crime.
