A Somali National Army officer has confirmed the killing of a senior Shabab operative and the capture of two others in an operation in the Middle Shabelle region by the SNA.
Abshir Mohamud, SNA commander for Unit 3, told military radio that the army carried out a scheduled operation on Sunday, April 18 along the road connecting the towns of Balad and Jowhar in southern Somalia, inflicting casualties on the militants.

“Our forces killed a senior Shabab commander who was in charge of planting landmines in the Middle Shabelle region,” Mohamud said, adding that the operation also killed Mohamud’s bodyguard and captured two other senior Shabab officials.
The Somali government has increased operations against al-Shabab in the south, but the militants still occupy some rural areas in those regions, launching ambushes and planting landmines.
