The men of Kano Police Command have arrested a senior official with the Hisbah police, who is in charge of enforcing Sharia law and arresting fornicators in Kano State, for allegedly sleeping with a married woman in a hotel.
According to a Kano radio station, the official was arrested in the Sabon Gari neighborhood of the city.
According to sources, the arrested commander is in charge of apprehending beggars and prostitutes in the Kano metro region
Describing the incident as unfortunate, Kano Hisbah Commander Muhammed Haruna said a two-man committee had been formed to investigate the matter.
As part of their Sharia compliance, Hisbah officers routinely arrest unmarried people trapped in hotels, ostensibly for sexual activities.
Hisbah, which was founded to impose Sharia, has recently banned trendy haircuts, sagging and disc jockeys playing music at social events, as well as seizing tricycles from riders who had pictures on them that were deemed to be agaisnt the tenets of Islam.
Hisbah also made it illegal for commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders to transport two women at the same time.
