Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo said the late Esogban and Odionwere of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri, was a father who represented the essence of the Benin tradition.
Obaseki said this on Friday, while paying tribute to the late number two palace chief in Benin Kingdom, after the service of songs at the deceased residence in Benin.
According to him, “Chief Edebiri is a father of all, a colossus of our time, an icon in our generation and a compass to many, whom we are lucky and privileged to have.
“He played that role as a political father to many, irrespective of political affiliation, and he had been part and parcel of the political landscape of Edo until his passage few weeks ago.
“He was my political father, I came to him for prayers when I wanted to contest for governorship seat, and he told me your father, Gaius Obaseki, was my play mate but he is no more; you are my political son.”
He added that the Esogban contributed his quota in all ramifications and was involved in taking Nigeria forward.
“He represented who we are as a people. He participated in struggling for Nigeria, liberation and emancipation of our region.
In a related development, Rev Felix Omobude of the New Covenant Gospel Church, noted that the Esogban stood for what he believed in.
“I call on you today to serve God passionately and leave a legacy behind like Chief Edebiri,” he said.
Notable personalities, including past governors, deputy governors, senators, lawmakers in the state and National Assembly were present at the event.
