The Nigerian Army has immortalised late Sgt. Folusho Fagbemiro, a female soldier, who served in the Army War College Canteen and died in active service in June, by naming the college’s canteen after her.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, at the ceremony on Tuesday, in Abuja said that the posthumous recognition of the late soldier was a demonstration of his resolve to reward excellence, loyalty and dedication.
Yahaya, who was represented by the Commander, Corps of Supply and Transport (NAST), Maj.-Gen. Bolaji Salami described the late Fagbemiro as dedicated and loyal personnel, hence the need for recognition.
He said the immortalization was to ensure that her memory lives on and to also reaffirm the enduring spirit of duty and service to others.
He challenged the personnel of the Nigerian army to always strive to be remembered for something good while in service and out of service as exemplified by the late soldier.

“With the unveiling today, of Sgt. Fagbemiro canteen, we express our feelings of her fund memories and gratitude for her service.
“We pray for God to continue to bless the memory of Sgt. Fagbemiro and shelter our family in his everlasting grace,’’ he said.
The Commandant, AWCN, Maj. Gen. Solomon Uduonwa said the late sergeant was of NAST, served in the college’s catering department with distinction before her demise in June.
Uduonwa, who was represented by the Director, War and Strategy, AWCN, Brig-Gen. Umar Alkali said that it was in recognition of her exemplary service that the college proposed to Army Headquarters to immortalise her.
He said that the event goes beyond the symbolic unveiling of the canteen named also an affirmation of gratitude that the college felt for the late sergeant.
According to him, the event was an honour and to keep alive the legacy for her enormous contributions to the college and the Nigerian army in general.
He thanked the Chief of Army Staff for approving the change of the name of the college Canteen and rename it after Sgt Fagbemiro.
The representative of the family and husband of the late Sgt. Fagbemiro, Mr Sunday Michael described her as a gallant soldier, inspiring, caring and a woman full of love.
He thanked the college and the chief of army staff for honouring his wife, saying the gesture by the Nigerian army had shown a good example of the quality of a good leader.
