Nasarawa Assembly lauds FG, state govts over poverty reduction programmes

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has lauded the Federal and state governments, as well as the World Bank for initiating good policies and programmes.

The assembly said that such policies would help to further tackle unemployment and poverty in the state.

Alhaji Mohammed Okpoku, the Chairman, House Committee on NASIEC, Multilateral and Community Development, made the commendation, on Friday in Lafia.

He spoke when the Nasarawa State Cares Coordinating unit of NG- CARES and other agencies appeared before the committee on their 2022 budget performance assessments.

Okpoku (APC- Udege/Loko) said that the programmes initiated on poverty reduction were life-touching projects, hence, the need for the committee to appreciate the assignment.

He expressed happiness with the implementation of NG- CARES and other projects embarked upon by the World Bank, and the Federal and State Government towards reducing poverty in the state.

The chairman said that the committee decided to invite the management of the agencies to assess their 2022 budget performances.

” We want to appreciate the World Bank, Federal and the Nasarawa State Governments for ensuring the existence of the life-touching programmes across the state.

” These programmes such as cash transfer, public works, water, education, health, nutrition, agriculture and roads, among other infrastructure, have direct bearing on the lives of our people.

” These programmes have reduced and will continue to reduce unemployment, restiveness and poverty in the state, thereby improving on the standard of living of our people,” he said.

Okpoku also said that the projects initiated by them would boost agricultural production, socio-economic activities and the health status of the people of the state.

The chairman assured the state government of effective collaboration to promote urban and rural development in the state.

Earlier, Mr Umar Dahiru, Coordinator, Nasarawa State Cares Coordinate Unit, said it was established to coordinate and monitor the activities of Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus Programme (NG CARES).

This, he said, was to improve on the standard of living of the people of the state.

He listed some of the NG CARES interventions to include cash transfer, public works, markets,  and other infrastructure.

The Coordinator said that the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus Programme (NG-CARES) was for the poor and vulnerable persons across the 13 local government areas of the state.

The management of Nasarawa State Bureau for Rural Development, led by its Director General Alhaji Mustapha Yahuza, represented by Mr Timothy Katsa, Chief Civil Engineer of the Agency, also appeared before the committee.

In the same vein, the Nasarawa State Community and Social Development Agency ( CSDA) led by its General Manager, Mr Saidu Ahmed- Eyshaa was at the event.

The duo commended the committee and the state government for supporting their policies and programmes.

The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission ( NASIEC), led by its Chairman, Mr Ayuba Usman-Wandai, thanked the committee for their support before, during and after the 2021 local government election in the state.

Wandai also commended Gov. Abdullahi Sule for promoting democracy at the grassroots by ensuring the successful conduct of local government elections in the state.

Responding, the Chairman of the Committee commended the management of Nasarawa State Bureau for Rural Development and Nasarawa State Community and Social Development Agency ( CSDA) and NASIEC for diligently developing their agencies.

The chairman said the committee would contribute leave to the overall development of the agencies.
