Man stabs wife: A man identified as Obum has allegedly stabbed his wife and a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Thompson Thomas Ugochukwu Onyekuru to death in Owerri, Imo State.
The tragic incident occurred in Umuokoto town in Umudibia Autonomous community in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state.
Obum, who is from Obowo in Imo State, allegedly stabbed his wife, Ogechi, with a knife during a heated argument.
Obum, who is thought to be mentally ill, is said to have allegedly locked his wife and their baby in their room and stabbed her several times.
According to the Daily Trust, he accused his wife of attempting to murder their only surviving son out of the three children they had since their marriage in 2016, claiming she was also responsible for the difficulties he was experiencing.
According to an eyewitness, the incident began around 4 p.m., when Obum’s wife, Ogechi, and her one-year-old son were heard screaming for help.
The late pastor and other neighbours stepped in to stop Obum from murdering his wife.
“As the crowd rallied to save the woman, Obum, with a knife, threatened to kill anyone who tried to stop him,” one eyewitness told the publication.
Obum became enraged after the neighbours successfully rescued the woman from his clutches and began chasing everyone with the blood-stained knife.
Obum, however, stabbed Onyekuru in the back as he was about to leave.
A passing police patrol team was dispatched to the scene, but he attacked the officers who attempted to arrest him. The cops then shot him in the leg to subdue him.
Obum and Onyekuru were then taken to the hospital, where both died. According to unconfirmed reports, Obum’s wife died as well.
According to Hon. Charles Anozie, President-General of Umuokoto Community Council (UCC), who confirmed the incident; Obum and the pastor were taken to the hospital and they later died.
