Louis Van Gaal makes surprising claim as he would “listen” to Portugal offer, Retired after 2022 World Cup. In advance of the 2022 World Cup, Louis Van Gaal said that, after a remarkable career, this would be his final turn as a football manager. In 2014 in Qatar, he led the Netherlands to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champions Argentina. Although many people automatically thought that this was his final performance, the 71-year-old revealed something very startling on Tuesday.
WHAT HE SAYS: According to 3FM, Van Gaal stated: “I’m once more retiring. But if Portugal calls, I’ll take the call. I can only say that.”
Portugal also crashed out in the World Cup quarter-final and have since parted with long time manager Fernando Santos as a result, leaving a job opening available. Van Gaal, though, has battled illness throughout his third stint as Netherlands manager, undergoing treatment for prostate cancer while preparing the Oranje for the World Cup.
Van Gaal was then hired by the Netherlands, although they were unable to advance to the 2002 FIFA World Cup. This was followed by a brief second stint at Barcelona before he returned to AZ, where he won the club’s second Eredivisie championship in history. In Germany, he won the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, and advanced to the UEFA Champions League final after moving to Bayern Munich in 2009. When he was brought back to lead the Netherlands for a second time, he guided the country to third place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Later following summer, he was employed by Manchester United, where he won the FA Cup, until being let go in 2016. Despite declaring his retirement in 2019 due to family obligations, Van Gaal came back.
