Lagos Government: The well-known Quilox Club on Ozumba Mbadwe Street in Victoria Island has been shut down by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) because of “noise pollution.”
According to a statement released on Sunday by the LASEPA General Manager, Dolapo Fasawe, the club owned by House of Representatives member Shina Peller was shut down because it disobeyed instructions about the planning of events and did not have a sound control permit.
Fasawe claimed that the organization had received distress calls from neighbors who were complaining about purported environmental nuisances the club was causing, along with video footage to back up their claims.
“Lagos had earlier increased the decibels to accommodate leisure/hospitality business interests. We, however, urged them to apply for sound control permits before hosting events to enable us to reach out to the host community of the intended programme and further deploy our officials to the venue for proper monitoring and prevention of excessive noise pollution,” she explained.
She claimed that Quilox Club received an invitation just like every other stakeholder, but for reasons the management alone knows did not honour the invitation.
No person or organization, she said, “is bigger than society,” and the agency is still working to make sure that everyone’s interests are safeguarded by the law.
Peller, who represents Oyo State’s Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal district, left the All Progressives Congress (APC) in June 2022 and joined the Accord Party ahead of the 2023 general elections.
His club was previously closed in December 2019 for violating COVID-19 rules regarding noise pollution and traffic congestion, as well as in July 2020 for the same reason.
