Israel has assassinated Hasam Abu Harbid, a senior militant commander in the Gaza Strip, on Monday, sparking a new barrage of rockets at Israeli cities.
The Shin Bet security service and the Israeli military disclosed this in a joint statement that warplanes attacked and killed the commander of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s Northern Division.
In Gaza, Islamic Jihad is a militant group that has been fighting alongside Hamas in the recent escalation.
“Abu Harbid has consistently led rocket launches against Israel as well as shooting attacks against soldiers,” the statement said, adding that he was behind an attack last Monday that injured an Israeli civilian.
According to the statement, he was a commander in the Islamic Jihad for the past 15 years.
Also, a rocket barrage from Gaza was launched at southern Israel shortly after the attack.

According to another statement issued by Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency health service, one of the rockets struck a residential building in Ashdod city, causing damage and injuring three people.
According to a military notice issued on Monday, approximately 3,150 rockets were fired from Gaza into Israeli territory.
Approximately 460 of these rockets were intercepted by Israel and fell within the Gaza Strip.
According to the army, Israel’s Iron Dome Air Defense System intercepted approximately 90% of the rockets.
At least 200 people were killed in the besieged Palestinian enclave, including 59 children.
Meanwhile, in Israel, ten people were killed, including a five-year-old boy and a soldier.
