Islamic New Year: Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has directed the Muslim Ummah to keep an eye out for the new moon of Muharram 1443 AH on Sunday, August 8.
The directive was issued by Abubakar on Saturday, according to a statement signed by Prof. Sambo Junaidu, Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto.
“This is to inform the Muslim Ummah that the new moon of Muharram 1443AH will be visible on Sunday, August 8, which is equivalent to the 29th day of Dhul-Hijja 1442AH.
“Muslims are therefore urged to start looking for the new moon on Sunday and report its sighting to the nearest District or Village Head for forwarding to the Sultan,” he said.

The Sultan prayed to Allah to help Muslims fulfil their religious obligations.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the sighting of the new moon of Muharram will usher in the new Islamic year 1443 AH.
The first month of the Islamic calendar, Muharram is one of four sacred months mentioned in the Quran, along with Rajab, the seventh month, and the eleventh and twelfth months, Dhul-Qadah and Dhul-Hijjah, which precede Muharram.
Warfare is prohibited in Islam during the month of Muharram, and Muslims believed that devotion during the sacred months drew a large reward from Almighty Allah.
