Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi has urged Nigerians not to use social media to drag the country down but to promote the country’s independence in front of the international community.
The appeal was made by the governor on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, in Birnin Kebbi while opening a workshop on New Media Ethics and Practice organized by the state Ministry of Information and Culture.
Bagudu described digital media as a “constantly evolving field” that has altered the face of journalism around the world.
He did, however, say that the social media community should support Nigeria’s positive image and refrain from posting materials that damage the country’s image.
According to the Governor, during the #EndSARS protest, false and unsubstantiated claims were posted on social media that painted Nigeria in a negative light.
As a result, he called for professionalism and decency in dealing with Nigerian problems.
Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, speaking at the event stated that information dissemination was still an important part of educating and informing the public.
The commissioner, who was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Garba Hamisu, emphasized the importance of practitioners maintaining good moral conduct in a dignified and responsible manner.
She clarified that the aim of the event was to educate and inform participants about the use of social media.
The commissioner encouraged the attendees to take advantage of the opportunity to help the administration publicize its policies and programs.
Prof. Nura Ibrahim of Bayero University Kano’s Faculty of Communication and Alhaji Abdullahi El-Kurebe, a veteran journalist and blogger, both agreed that social media has changed the way people live.
The duo urged social media practitioners to always authenticate before posting something on the internet when speaking on the subject of “Social Media as a Tool for Change and Growth.”
According to them, digital media is all about creativity and immersive technology, with an emphasis on transformation and innovation.
They discovered that social media has an impact on how people work, conduct business, farm, and care for their families, as well as all other aspects of human endeavour.
The workshop, which was highly educational, insightful, and interactive, attracted participants from all over the state.
