A group called Sister’s Guardian Initiative, has demanded for the eradication of oppressive cultural practices against women in the Ezinze Community in Enugu State.
The group made the call on Monday, March 15, 2021, during the inauguration ceremony of its members who will help in ending the termed oppressive cultural practices.
The group, which consists of ten women, was inaugurated by the Programme Officer of Gender, Adolescent and Child Protection Mrs Blessing Uchendu.
Speaking at the event, Uchendu stressed that the group’s goal was to uncover other inhumane treatment of women in the Community.
She encouraged the women to disclose any problems they couldn’t address to the organization.
while she admonished the women to be their “brother’s keeper,” and also overcome their differences through conversation.
Mrs. Nnenna Anozie, the Enugu State Chairperson of the Nigeria League of Women Voters, who was also present urged the women to build their capacities so that they can participate in all aspects of life, including politics.
Domestic violence, economic exploitation, denial of inheritance, and child trafficking are all aspects that Anozie urged men to stop.
She advocated for male and female children to receive equal treatment and opportunities, especially in education, in order to help them do well in life.
Mr. Kelvin Ochinanwata, the community’s President-General, who was represented by Mr Sergius Ugwueme, states that the community would investigate the issues posed by the women and find solutions.
