In a swift response to a distress call, the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) saved passengers by arresting a drunk driver who was driving recklessly in a way that could lead to a ghastly accident.
The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Bisi Kazeem, affirmed this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday 21 March 2021.
According to Kazeem, the drunk driver was apprehended around 13:35 am on Sunday in Kyakyama, Ogere area of Ogun State.
He said the Sector Commander received a distress call from a passenger who had noticed that the driver of the car she had boarded was driving in a dangerous manner.
According to him, a passenger named Mrs Matina reported that a few minutes into their journey, they noticed that the driver was drunk, prompting the passengers to warn him about his recklessness.
It was also revealed that the passengers got the FRSC call line from the internet and hurriedly put the call through to the FRSC for rescue when the driver refused to heed the warning from all the passengers.
According to Kazeem, the Sector Commander promptly dispatched a patrol team from RS2.24 Ogere Unit Command to arrest the driver after receiving the call.
This, he said, was to ensure the vehicle’s seizure, which was described as a white Toyota Hiace bus with the registration number FKJ 991 YA.
“The driver was subjected to a Blood Alcohol (BAC) test following his arrest and impoundment of the vehicle, and the result was 0.18 percent, which is significantly higher than the 0.05 percent allowed by road traffic regulations.
Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, the FRSC Corps Marshal, praised the passengers and also praised their courage.
The conduct, according to Oyeyemi, demonstrated not only that they were alert enough to notice the driver’s recklessness, but also showed that Nigerians were brave enough to report dangerous road use behaviour.
As a result, he urged motorists to imitate the actions of the passengers, emphasizing that road safety was a shared responsibility and everyone’s concern.
He noted that all road users must play their part to ensure their own and others’ safety.
