Hon. Sidie Tunis, Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, has pledged the willingness of lawmakers to solve all problems affecting women in the Sub-region.
Tunis made the remarks on Thursday at the conclusion of the delocalized meeting of the ECOWAS Parliamentary Joint Committee on Social Affairs, Gender and Women Empowerment, Education, Health, Science, and Culture in Monrovia, Liberia.
The delocalized conference, themed “Empowerment of Women in the West African Region,” was held to propose solutions to factors restricting women in the sub-region.
The speaker assured that, under his leadership, the Parliament’s fifth legislature would collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure that women’s problems were completely addressed.

“It is heartening to see this crucial meeting of the Joint Committees on Social Affairs, Gender and Women Empowerment, Education, Science and Culture, and Health come to a fruitful conclusion.
“The conference, themed “The Empowerment of Women in the ECOWAS Sub-region,” was educational, empowering, and enriching in every way.
“This is due to the topicality of the subject, as well as its relevance to the well-being of our people since whatever affects women affects children, and thus our future.
“The candid exchanges from all participants have assisted us in identifying factors impeding women’s economic and political empowerment in the ECOWAS region, as well as the role the Parliament may play in fostering their economic and political empowerment,” he said.
Tunis also stated that core recommendations from the meeting will be sent to line institutions through the ECOWAS Commission to assist Member States in implementing Article 63 of the Revised Treaty.
“The ECOWAS Revised Treaty empowers the Member States to take care of women’s concerns and progress.
“At this juncture, please allow me to assure you that the ECOWAS Parliament, in collaboration with all stakeholders, will make every effort to ensure that women’s problems are discussed to the fullest extent possible.
“We are mindful that it takes our sincere attention and actions; therefore, the onus is on us to persuade our states to take bold measures toward addressing the challenges that deny women the ability to succeed and be heard.
“States should take bold strides toward addressing challenges that deny women the ability to succeed and be heard.
“We are hopeful that we will triumph over gender inequality, fears, and vices that impede our states’ stability, happiness, and prosperity,” he said.
Tunis praised members of Parliament for putting in endless hours of effort, calling it a strong indication of their contribution to solving the region’s gender disparities.
