One of the contestants from the just finished Big Brother Naija Season 7 reality show, ‘ChiChi, has given a number of interviews after the show. She explained during one of these interviews with Hero Daniels of ITC media why she had an Igbo name while being from Edo State.
Chichi claims that although her parents were living in the East when she was born, they were from the Edo State. She was properly raised in the East, where she spent a lot of time learning the customs and even the language.
She continued by saying that she was more familiar with Igbo language and customs than Edo.
She said, “I am from Edo State because that’s where my parents are from. However, I was born and raised in the East. It’s because of all this that I understand Igbo language and traditions more than that of Edo State.
“You can see I bear an Igbo name ‘Chichi’ and I consider myself more of an Igbo girl than an Edo girl”.
It should be noted that ‘ChiChi was widely regarded as an Edo girl during the BBN show, especially when she got involved in a cultural dance group, together with Phyna and Rachel, in order to represent the Edo culture. However, she has come out to state the reason why she bears an Igbo name despite being an Edo girl.
