The Super Eagles of Nigeria and Nothingham Forest of England striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, says his celebration when he scored against Sao Tome and Principe in Uyo the other time is a way of saying thank you to God for the goals.
Awoniyi offered the exclamation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Ilorin.
NAN recalls that the Nothingham Forest attacker was on the scoresheet when the Super Eagles pummelled their visitors in Uyo on Sept. 10, in the last match of the 2024 AFCON qualifiers.
Awoniyi then while celebrating the goal covered his face with his shinguards which has a cross as an inscription on it.
“God is the only one that can make things happen and it is my own way of sharing light to the world.
“I always believe that even though you are not a perfect human being, light is always shinning in the darkness.
“One with God is the majority and that was why I chose to celebrate my goal that way,” Awoniyi said.
The Super Eagles’ marksman, who described representing Nigeria at any stage as a privilege, pledged to always give his best whenever he is called upon.
Awoniyi has scored thrice in four games played so far this in the English Premier League, even though he has become a household name in Nothingham in England.
NAN also recalls that Nigeria finished top of the group with 15 points ahead of Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe.
