The Federal Government has been urged to use the $23 million in recovered Abacha money to fund the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) requests.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, ASUU President Professor Emmanuel Osodeke made the request while criticizing the ongoing shutdown of public universities as a result of the protracted lecturers’ strike.
An agreement to repatriate additional funds stolen by the former president of state of Nigeria, Sani Abacha, was signed by the Federal Government and the US on Tuesday.
“Your Universities are closed for a full six months. Where should the money go if you truly care about education now that you have access to a sum you weren’t expecting? They said there that they are cash-strapped. This nation must be loved”, Osedeke said
On February 14, 2022, ASUU began its strike. A four-week warning strike was then declared. However, after a month, the professors decided to prolong it by eight weeks, claiming that the government needed more time to consider their demands.
