Abba Kyari can be dismissed: The Police Service Commission has stated that it may dismiss Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari if its investigation concludes that he is guilty of the $1.1 million Hushpuppi internet fraud.
Kyari has been accused of accepting a bribe from Instagram celebrity Ramon Abbas a.k.a Hushpuppi in order to arrest and jail a member of his online fraud gang, Chibuzo Vincent, following a dispute over a $1.1 million fraudulent operation that he carried out. Kyari was also accused of sending Abbas bank account information in order to deposit payment for Vincent’s arrest and imprisonment.
He has since denied the charge. Since then, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered an internal investigation into the allegations levelled against Kyari, who has been identified as the most decorated police officer.
In response to the development, the Police Service Commission’s Commissioner in Charge of Media, Austin Braimoh, stated in an interview with Punch that the PSC would not be bound by the IG’s review of the allegations against Kyari, noting that the commission would conduct a further investigation into whatever findings the police authorities made on Kyari. He went on to say that the findings of the commission would determine Kyari’s future in the police force.
When asked if the police could be trusted to conduct a thorough, unbiased investigation, the commissioner stated that the PSC investigation department will conduct additional investigations based on the findings of the police review.
Braimoh explained the disciplinary process the embattled DCP would face, saying Kyari would be questioned before being interrogated by the Force Disciplinary Committee.
