In light of rumors that Barcelona may try to re-sign Lionel Messi’ next summer, Joan Laporta has declared that the club will erect a statue honoring him.
In 2021, Messi’ parted ways with Barcelona after nearly 20 years of service because the team was unable to renew his contract due to mounting debts. Laporta has already revealed plans to immortalize the Argentine outside the team’s illustrious stadium, yet he didn’t even receive a farewell performance after his departure was made public.
Laporta said at Barca’s General Assembly over the weekend: “We will build a statue of Leo Messi outside the Camp Nou. The decision has been made.”
Messi’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain is set to expire in the summer of 2019, and there have been rumors that he would return to Camp Nou. However, the 35-year-old has the option to stay longer at Parc des Princes, and he won’t make a final decision until the end of the current campaign.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner missed PSG’s most recent Ligue 1 match against Reims due to injury, but he is expected to make a comeback on Tuesday night against Benfica in the Champions League.
