The Nigerian army has explained why a female soldier was detained after accepting a proposal from a male corps member at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Yikpata, Kwara State.
Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, told Punch that the female officer violated military laws by engaging in a public display of amorous relationship with a paramilitary trainee, a corps member.
The soldier was seen hugging and kissing a male corps member after accepting a ring from him in a video that went viral a few days ago.
Nwachukwu claimed that the female soldier violated military personnel codes of conduct while on duty and that her actions amounted to taking advantage of her trainee. He also claimed that if a male soldier proposed to a female corper during the NYSC parade, the public would have been outraged and the Army would have been accused of coercion.
