Twitter long-awaited “Super Follows” feature, which allows creators to sell subscriptions for access to exclusive content, went live on September 1st.
The feature, which was first revealed in February, will allow users to pay a monthly subscription fee to subscribe to accounts they want in exchange for exclusive content. Super Follows are another useful tool for creators in the emerging patchwork of monetization options across social platforms.
The goal of the new feature is to make Twitter the preferred online venue for clickable stars while also increasing Twitter’s revenue in ways that do not clutter the platform with ads or promotions.
Eligible accounts can set their own prices for Super Follow subscriptions, with the option of charging $2.99, $4.99, or $9.99 per month, which is comparable to the cost of a paid newsletter. They can then choose to restrict some tweets to subscribers only, while still reaching out to their unpaid follower base in regular tweets.
Paid subscribers will be distinguished from unpaid followers in a sea of tweets by a special Super Follower badge. The badge appears in replies, enhancing a follower’s ability to directly interact with accounts they choose to support. Super Follows will appear as a distinct button on the profile page for accounts that have Super Follows enabled.
