Gunmen attack passengers in Ekiti: Police in Ekiti State has confirmed a gun attack on travellers in the state on Friday night.
ASP Sunday Abutu, a police spokesman in Ado-Ekiti, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the gunmen killed the driver of the vehicle, a LEXUS 330 SUV.
They also took the two other occupants of the vehicle, he said.
The attack occurred between Ewu-Ekiti and Aiyetoro-Ekiti, two neighbouring communities in Ekiti State’s Ilejemeje and Ido/Osi Local Government Areas.
According to ASP Abutu, police, in collaboration with local hunters and Amotekun Corps operatives, were already combing the forest around the area to rescue the victims and apprehend the gunmen.
However, eyewitnesses told NAN that the vehicle had five occupants and that they were attacked by suspected herdsmen while returning from a social function in the area.
Eyewitnesses also confirmed that the driver was shot dead and the other passengers were kidnapped.
The vehicle, with the registration number LAGOS KRD 264 GV, was abandoned in the middle of a bush, with only the dead driver inside.
At the time of filing this report, the identities of the victims had not been disclosed.
According to NAN, the incident on Friday occurred four days after gunmen suspected of being herdsmen shot and killed a man named Ademola Afolayan in a poultry farm in Ikere-Ekiti on Monday, Aug. 2 at about 5 p.m.
According to NAN sources, the gunmen, numbering around five, invaded the poultry farm located at Eselemo Farm, Igbo-Oka area close to Akure Road, shooting sporadically and killing Afolayan in the process.
According to reports, two people narrowly escaped the Monday incident.
Comrade Clement Adekola, former Ekiti State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, also narrowly escaped death when his vehicle was attacked on Tuesday, Aug. 3, around 5 p.m.
The gunmen opened fire on Adekola’s vehicle as it was travelling along the Ikere-Igbara Odo Road in Ekiti State’s Ikere Local Government Area.
Kidnappers allegedly kidnapped passengers in three commercial buses on the Akure/Ikere-Ado Ekiti road in Ekiti State recently.
According to reports, the kidnapping gunmen swooped on the traveller’s vehicles as they drove through dangerous areas of the road.
