150 Nigerian doctors who want to work in the United Kingdom are currently preparing to take clinical exams that will determine their eligibility.
According to Punch, the coronavirus pandemic pushed back the examination normally conducted by the General Medical Council, which is in charge of granting medical doctor licenses in the UK.
As of June 9, 2021, there were 8,384 Nigerian medical doctors working in the UK. However, the council’s Senior Media Officer, Miranda Newey, told the publication in an e-mail that if not for the pandemic, the number of Nigerian doctors in the UK would have increased.
According to Newey, “due to the pandemic, there have been significant delays for Nigerian doctors taking our clinical examination before gaining registration.” According to the information I have, we have 150 doctors who have been delayed. I am hoping to get more data to share with you so you can make the comparison you want.”
In response to the news, Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, National President of the National Association of Resident Doctors, urged the Federal Government to address the emigration of highly trained medical practitioners as soon as possible.
“It is normal for us to experience brain drain, and I don’t blame the doctors for migrating,” he said. Consider those of us who have chosen to remain behind. The only way the Federal Government can address this is if it responds to doctor demands.
“Look at resident doctors, the majority of our members are still owed. If our well-being is our top priority, there will be no need to migrate,” Okhuaihesuyi said in an interview with the Punch,
