Three community leaders in Ikotun area of Lagos State have been arrested for reportedly lynching a supposed burglar to death.
CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police Command’s spokesman, said in a statement on Thursday, April 8, 2021, that the burglar was lynched to death following an alleged attempt to rob one Mrs. Adeyemi Opeyemi.
“The burglar reportedly broke into Opeyemi’s room at No. 2, Asalu Bus Stop, off Abaranje Road, Ikotun, in an attempt to rob her.
“But she raised an alarm, and the burglar fled into the street, where he was arrested and beaten to death,” Adejobi said.
According to him, the arrested community leaders (names withheld) have some concerns about the suspect’s death.

“The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has condemned the use of jungle justice on the suspect.
“He has promised to fight it because it is becoming more prevalent and is counterproductive to our joint attempts to strengthen the Criminal Justice System in Lagos State,” he said.
Similarly, on April 6, 2021, police operatives assigned to the Ojo Division apprehended three suspected traffic robbers.
The suspects (names withheld) were all arrested at Alaba Rago Market in Ojo-Lagos for assaulting innocent commuters in the Ojo area.
According to Adejobi, other alleged recipients of stolen objects from the traffic robbers (names withheld) were also arrested on April 7, 2021, as a result of a police investigation.
“The suspects admitted to the crime of assaulting and dispossessing commuters along the Ojo-Iba road,” Adejobi stated.
He also noted that one more suspect was apprehended during the investigation.
“He admitted to being a pickpocket who has been picking people’s phones along Iyana Iba in Ojo-Lagos,” he said.
According to the command’s spokesman, the Commissioner of Police has directed that all criminals be referred to the Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for further investigation and potential prosecution.
The commissioner warned that the command would leave no stone unturned in its efforts to rid the state of violence and criminality.
