Meet Chimaobi Sam Atu, a Labour Party (LP) candidate, who was proclaimed the winner of the Enugu North/Enugu South Federal Constituency election held on Saturday, February 25.
His victory was announced by State INEC Returning Officer Dr. (Mrs.) Evelyn Ijeoma Ezepue after he defeated the incumbent member, Hon. Offor Chukwuegbo of the PDP.
Chimaobi is a community vigilante and bus driver whose success gives the common folk hope.
He received 65,247 votes, defeating his nearest competitors, Hon. Nnonso Nnamani of the APGA, who received 9215 votes, and Hon. Offor Chukwuegbo, who received 7,617 votes.
While the APC candidate, Hon. Juliet Egbo earned 2394 votes.
Atu, a resident of Ndiaga Ugwuaji in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State, was thus re-elected after meeting all of the legal conditions.
Similarly, INEC declared Donatus Mathew of the Labour Party (LP) as the winner of the Kaura Constituency in Kaduna in the Federal House of Representatives.
Matthew, an Okada rider, is the first LP candidate to be elected to the House of Representatives in 2023.
According to the returning officer, Prof. Elijah Ella, he received 10,508 votes to defeat the incumbent member and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, Hon. Gideon Lucas Gwani, who received 10,297 votes.
Prof. Ella stated that the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate received 9,919 votes, while the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) received 5,354 votes to finish third and fourth, respectively.
Addressing reporters shortly after being declared the winner of the election, Mathew thanked the electorate for their trust in him to serve them in the Green Chamber.
