A Karu Grade I Area Court in Abuja on Tuesday sentenced a 24-year-old unemployed man, Emmanuel Elom to three years imprisonment for stealing a kitchen sink from a hotel.
The judge, Umar Mayana, however, gave the convict an option of N100,000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crimes.
The convict had pleaded guilty to the charge of criminal trespass and theft but begged for mercy.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Olarewaju Osho told the court that the convict was arrested and taken to the Jikwoyi police station on Nov. 28, 2022 by Mr Victor Uranta of Jikwoyi, Abuja.
Osho said the convict also had one cutlass and gas burner and when interrogated, he said the items were for sale.
He added that during police investigation the convict admitted to have trespassed into “Bencalic Hotel” and stealing the items.
The offence, he said, is punishable under sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.
A 22-year-old Gidon Asu on Tuesday appeared before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged theft of Android phone valued N120, 000.
The defendant is standing trial before Magistrate L.J.K. Layeni, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Dr Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Jan. 1, at Magbon area of Lagos.
Uche said that the defendant conspired with another person, now at large, to attack the complainant, one Mrs Precious Jeremiah.
He alleged that the defendant stole an Huawei Android phone, belonging to the complainant, and also manipulated the stolen phone to withdraw the sum of N60,000 from the complainant’s bank account.
According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes the provisions of Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Layeni adjourned further trial in the case until Feb. 8. (NAN)
