The Peoples Democratic Party PDP Presidential Campaign Council in Rivers State has urged the police high command and other security organizations, such as the office of the National Security Adviser to increase surveillance in the state in advance of the elections next year. A
The call was made following a recent attack on Senator Lee Maeba, its chairman’s residence.
Senator Lee Maeba, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Presidential Campaign council chairman, told reporters on Monday in Port Harcourt that all parties involved must work together to achieve a peaceful election.
The Campaign Council is pushing all PDP members in Rivers State to unite for a landslide victory notwithstanding Governor Nyesom Wike’s outspoken dislike of the party’s presidential candidate due to unfair treatment.
He contends that the Atiku/Okowa ticket is too crucial for the Niger Delta’s residents to be dropped for any reason.
Uche Secondus, the former national chairman of the PDP, Abiye Sekibo, the current senator George Thompson Sekibo, Sen. Sir Celestine Omehia, Austin Opara, the former deputy speaker of the house of representatives, Engr. Tele Ikuru, the former deputy governor of the state, Chinyere Igwe, and Tamuno-Sisi Gogo-Jaja, a former commissioner in the Wike-led administration, were all present.
The Niger Delta’s security situation has been worse since 2005. Heavy-handed, well-coordinated gangs break into oil and gas facilities in the delta and steal large amounts of crude oil worth millions of dollars each year. They also disrupt operations, abduct workers, and sabotage equipment, including pipelines.
The risk to those employed in the delta’s oil and gas industries is still very significant. Gangs have kidnapped SPDC workers and subcontractors in recent years. During the same time period, assaults and kidnappings resulted in the deaths of employees of our joint venture.
The Niger Delta’s instability is caused by a variety of issues, including as unrealized desires for political involvement and recognition, poverty and historical marginalization, and criminal activity. We think that the problem needs to be solved.
