ASUU Threatens: The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has stated that it will bypass the backlog of academic sessions that was interrupted by its eight-month strike If the federal government maintains on the no work, no pay rule.
On Monday, ASUU members, primarily from the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Chapter of Rivers state, organised a special congress and protest rally.
They claimed that the guideline does not apply to them because they resumed work seven months ago and are actively clearing backlogs of work by combining two sessions.
“Today’s special congress and protest rally is to show our discontent with the recent attempt by the federal government of Nigeria to reduce university teachers to daily pay casual workers,” said Dr. Uzoma Chima, Chairman of ASUU, Uniport.
“Because we know that university teachers are not recognized as casual workers anywhere in the globe.” So, we invited parents and kids to a meeting today to update them on the situation after our strike was called off.
“Since we terminated the strike in response to the National Industrial Court order, we have returned to resume our jobs and are already catching up on work we should have done during the strike.” Because we are an intellectual union, the no work, no pay policy does not apply to us.
