EU to provide €1.5bn: Ukraine needs “a predictable and stable flow of income” for the future, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Friday.
Von der Leyen said in a press conference after a summit of EU leaders that the leaders discussed providing 1.5 billion euros (1.46 billion U.S. dollars) to Ukraine per month as from 2023.
The EU leader said the income was to enable Ukraine to have enough resources for the basics.
It was not clear if this would be grants or loans or some other financing format.
In May, the European Commission proposed providing nine billion euros (8.8 billion dollars) in grants and loans to Ukraine to keep its civilian administration running.
However, only a third had been disbursed so far, leading to calls to improve the way in which Ukraine received aid.
EU leaders reiterated their support for Ukraine “as long as it takes” and condemned Russia’s actions, but also the involvement of Belarus and Iran in the war.
The bloc was prepared to impose more sanctions on Russia and Belarus.
China’s relationship with the EU was also on the agenda with the discussion focusing on whether Beijing should be seen as a rival, competitor or partner depending on geopolitics, trade or fighting climate change.
European Council President Charles Michel said the EU does not want “to embark in systematic confrontation” with China but that the bloc does want to avoid being naive.
