Paul Onuachu, a Super Eagles striker, has won the 2020/21 Ebony Shoe Award in Belgium.
The award for the best African player was presented to him in Europe on Monday, June 7, 2021.
Onuachu outperforms his Genk teammate Théo Bongonda, who scored 18 goals and dished out six assists in 39 games across all competitions; RSC Anderlecht’s Albert Sambi Lokonga (Congo) and Lukas Nmecha (Nigeria) duo; and Club Brugge’s Angola defender.
The 25-year-old forward also scored 33 goals in 38 Belgian Jupiler league games this season, breaking Wesley Sonck’s twenty-year-old record.
He further finished the season as the top goalscorer and best player in the Belgian Jupiler League, helping Genk finish second in the league table.
The striker is the fifth Nigerian to receive the award, following Daniel Amiokachi (1992, 1994), Victor Ikpeba (1993), Godwin Okapara (1995), and Celestine Babayaro (1996). (1996).
The Ebony Shoe award is given annually in Belgium to the best African or African-origin player in the Belgian Pro League.
